Are Electric Fireplaces Worth the Money?
Developments in technology are continuously improving the standard of living. The impact can be witnessed in almost all aspects of life. For example, technology has made home appliances smarter. Smart technology is the need of the hour as we are running low on earth’s resources and trying to save the environment as well.
A good example of smart home appliances is the electric fireplace. The name seems fancy enough and if you have seen one, you would think that it is expensive. However, following, are the reasons why an electric fireplace is worth the money:
Cost to Operate
Even if you spend a hefty amount on buying the electric fireplace, you only have to spend 0.3 to 3 cents per hour without heat. If you are using the heat feature, the cost is only 16 cents per hour; even if the heat is on 100% of the time. In comparison, a gas fireplace is going to take almost 20 cents per hour depending on the use of BTUs.
Installation
All you need is a standard electrical outlet and installation is without venting. A gas fireplace, on the other hand, needs venting and should be on an outside wall with a gas line being must.
Portability
You can easily change the location of the electric fireplace as your need may change. On the other hand, the gas fireplace is fixed and similar could be said for wood counterpart.
Heat
The heat in both the gas and electric fireplace can be controlled by the thermostat. However, with a wooden fireplace, you need a constant resource to create fire. An electric fireplace does not need the heat to be on for the flame to stay unlike the gas counterpart.
Efficiency
The electric fireplace is energy efficient and cost effective. There is no risk of losing the heat through the venting as the case with gas fireplaces. A gas fireplace can lose 20% to 30% of the heat through the venting decreasing the efficiency.
Maintenance
The LED technology does not need any maintenance. These can be replaced every 2 to 3 years but sometimes may last longer than that, so you can save money. On the other hand, safety inspections are a must with gas fireplaces on an annual basis.
Safety
With an electric fireplace, there is no risk of exposure to carbon monoxide. Moreover, the glass and metal don’t get hot to touch.
Usage Period
An electric fireplace can be used all year long; you can switch off the heat according to your need. In comparison, the gas or wooden fireplace is only limited for use in the colder months.
The price may seem expensive to some but it will come as a surprise that an electric fireplace is less costly compared to a gas fireplace. You will only have to spend between $1400 to $3000 that is almost $2000 less expensive given the price ranges for gas fireplaces.
Considering these reasons, it seems reasonable to say that an electric fireplace does not only allow you to save money but worth what you spend.
