2-Sided Gas Fireplaces

Double sided gas fireplaces are open on two opposite faces, so a single firebox finishes two rooms and the fire is visible from both. Manufacturers also call them see-through or pass-through. They are the reason a wall between a living room and a dining room can stop being a wall and start being a feature.

Two-sided is not the same as three-sided

The distinction matters because the installations are completely different. A double sided unit is open on two opposite faces and lives inside a wall, seen from the rooms on either side. A three-sided or bay unit is open on the front plus both ends and sits at the end of a wall or a peninsula, seen from one room.

If the fireplace has to serve two separate rooms, you need a double sided model, and no amount of clever placement makes a three-sided one do that job.

Glass, mesh, or nothing: what you are actually looking through

This is the difference people do not expect, and it follows directly from how the fireplace burns.

Direct vent models have glass on both faces, and it is structural rather than decorative. A direct vent fireplace is a sealed appliance that draws combustion air from outside and exhausts outside, and the glass is what keeps the two systems apart. It cannot be removed.

Vent-free models are open-fronted, with a mesh safety barrier. A vent-free fireplace draws its combustion air from the room, so it cannot be sealed behind glass and still work. What you get instead is a mesh barrier across the opening, which is a required safety part rather than an accessory. Several models let you retract it into hidden pockets for an unobstructed view.

See-through log sets have no enclosure at all. They are burners and logs designed to drop into a masonry see-through fireplace you already have, so the opening stays exactly as it is.

If the word glass appears on a vent-free product page, read it carefully. It usually means a decorative glass liner on the interior back wall, or glass media covering the burner, neither of which is a glass front.

Ventless or direct vent

This collection contains both, and it is the decision that governs where the fireplace can go.

Direct vent models are sealed. They pull combustion air from outside and exhaust through a coaxial pipe, so nothing from the fire enters either room. They are legal everywhere, they suit bedrooms and tightly built modern houses, and they need a viable route to an exterior wall or roof.

Ventless models burn cleanly enough to need no flue at all, which makes them installable in places a vented unit cannot reach. In exchange they carry real regulatory limits: vent-free appliances are prohibited or restricted in some states and cities, California and parts of Massachusetts among them, and some codes bar them from bedrooms. Wall depth is the constraint people miss

A see-through firebox is deep, because it has to be finished on both faces with a burner between them. Nearly every model needs a framed opening deeper than a standard 2x4 partition gives you, so the wall is usually furred out or built from the start as a feature wall.

Measure before you choose a width. The framing dimensions are in each product's manual, and they, not the fireplace's face size, decide whether the installation is a weekend of framing or a structural change.

Indoor, outdoor, and both at once

Several units here are rated for outdoor exposure, which opens the installation people ask about most: one face in a living room, the other on a covered patio. It needs a model listed for outdoor use on that side plus correct flashing at the wall penetration. Check the listed ratings on each product rather than assuming a handsome outdoor photo means the unit is rated for it.
