Introduction

Are you looking to create a warm and inviting outdoor space that's perfect for gatherings and relaxation?

Look no further! Fire pits are versatile and stylish additions that can transform your backyard into a cozy haven that you'll never want to leave.

But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the right one for your needs? Don't worry, we've got you covered.

In this guide, we'll take you through the best fire pits guaranteed to elevate your outdoor experience. From sleek and modern designs to rustic and traditional styles, there's something for everyone.

Before we dive in, let's talk about different types of fire pits available on the market right now.

Once we are all on the same page, we'll highlight the best fire pits in each category and different applications.

Different types of fire pits

A fire pit is essentially a vessel that contains fire and prevents it from spreading. When it comes to contemporary fire pits, there are several different types to choose from.

Each type has its own unique features and advantages. Let's explore the most popular options:

1. Wood-burning fire pits

Wood-burning fire pits are the classic choice and offer that authentic crackling sound and scent of a real wood fire. They provide a traditional and cozy ambiance, perfect for those who enjoy the rustic charm.

They require a steady supply of firewood and need to be tended to, making them a good option for those who enjoy the process of building and maintaining a fire.

2. Smokeless fire pits

Smokeless fire pits are wood-burning fire pits designed to minimize smoke production, creating a more enjoyable and comfortable experience.

They achieve this by utilizing advanced airflow technology that makes the fire burn hotter, eliminating most of the smoke. This is a great option if you want to avoid the annoyance and discomfort of smoke blowing in your face.

3. Gas fire pits

Gas fire pits are a convenient and hassle-free option. They're powered by either natural gas or propane, allowing for instant and adjustable flames at the push of a button.

Gas fire pits offer greater control over the fire and eliminate the need to gather firewood. They're also cleaner and don't produce any smoke, making them a popular choice for those with allergies or respiratory sensitivities.

4. Propane fire pits

Gas fire pits have a sub-category - propane fire pits - that deserve a special mention. The reason is simple; these pits are self-contained units, eliminating the need for gas lines and making them installable anywhere.

LP tanks, which usually come in the right size to fit inside or next to the fire pit, provide the source of fuel. Sounds easy, right? That’s because it is!

Simply pick up your preferred size LP tank from a local hardware store, attach it to the fire pit and voila! It’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the warmth.

5. Ethanol fire pits

Ethanol fire pits are a safer and more eco-friendly alternative to traditional wood fire pits. They use clean-burning alcohol based ethanol fuel, producing no smoke, ash, or harmful chemicals, and are thus an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor use.

These are available in a variety of styles and sizes making them perfect for any space, and are often more convenient to use than wood-burning alternatives, allowing for easy, instant ignition with no mess, smoke, or hassle.

6. Gel fire pits

While the popularity of gel fuel fire pits is dwindling, it's still worth noting this fifth fuel type exists. Alcohol-based gel fuel is akin to ethanol in burning clean and is sold in safe-to-use cans.

Tabletop fire pits are one of the adorable configurations of this category, and gel fuel allows for indoor or outdoor use.

7. Fire pit grills

Fire pit grills are not just for fire, they’re for good food too! Investing in one for your backyard means you get two features in one: a fire pit and a grill. It’s a wise choice that saves space and money.

Our fire pit grills are crafted with durable materials and they'll last for years. Experience the joy of cooking and camping right at home!

8. DIY fire pits

As previously mentioned, a fire pit is essentially a container for fire that can be created in many ways. From stacking bricks to digging holes, there are endless DIY opportunities.

There are several DIY fire pit products that can elevate your DIY fire pit game. Some examples include gas burner kits, complete gas and ethanol fire pit kits, and fire table kits.

9. Fire and water bowls

Fire and water bowls are essentially gas fire pits that come with a water fountain feature.

While they're mostly installed by swimming pools, they can also be set up independently to create an ultimate water and fire relaxation space. Such pits radiate warmth and style, making them perfect for outdoor gatherings and leisure.

Now that you're familiar with the different types of fire pits available, it's time to dive into the best fire pits that will transform your outdoor space into a cozy haven.

Whether you have a small budget or are looking to splurge on a high-end option, we've got you covered. Let's explore the best fire pits on the market.

Why we like it:

  • Fire Pit Art fire pits are true works of art
  • Made in the USA
  • Handcrafted by Tennessee craftsmen
  • Made of the heaviest gauge metal among many fire pits today and will last for many years
  • No maintenance; can be left outside

Things to consider:

  • These fire pits are very heavy, so you will need a few people to help you set them in place + they arrive via freight and require a delivery appointment.

We think our own Smokeless Concrete Fire Bowl is the best choice in this category. Here's why:

Why we like it:

  • Smokeless Fire Pit with concrete enclosure - a modern way to enjoy a wood fire

  • Made in the USA

Things to consider:

Best concrete gas fire pit table

Rectangular concrete fire pit tables are popular and timeless. They make a perfect centerpiece for an outdoor lounge area. There are a lot of these fire pits on the market so it's hard to pick a good one.

You want beautiful flames and a high-quality burner that will last for many years. Here is the best rectangular concrete fire pit in our opinion: EcoSmart Fire Daiquiri.

Why we like it:

  • Triple fuel advantage: runs on natural gas, propane, or ethanol
  • At roughly 70 inches it seats a full lounge group around it, rather than a pair of chairs
  • 65,000 BTU on either gas, which is real warmth and not just a flame to look at
  • Stainless steel burner and pan, which is what survives being left outdoors
  • Minimalist concrete form that works with most outdoor furniture

Things to consider:

  • As with any other gas fire pit, you will need it professionally installed.
  • Gas models carry a manufacturing lead time, so order well ahead of the season you want it for.

A mockup image of Athena Olympus Fire Pit Table in a patio setting

Fire pit tables are very popular right now. Our pick for the best propane fire pit table goes to the Athena Olympus.

Why we like it:

  • Popular minimalistic, rectangular design
  • Compartment inside the fire pit can store a 5 lb. LP tank
  • Larger surface around the fire to use as a table
  • Unit narrows toward the bottom giving more leg room for those seated around it

Customer Reviews:

Don't just take it from us, here is what one of our customers says about this fire pit:

"The fire pit arrived safely on a pallet, and within 4 hours, were able to put in into place in my backyard, surrounded by outdoor couches. Love this fire pit! Wide enough to put plates on, great for casual gatherings. I went with copper-colored reflective glass, and it looks great."

- Kurt G.

Best Round Propane Fire Pit Table

Wine Barrel Dude 46-inch round wooden wine barrel gas fire pit coffee table

In photo: Wine Barrel Dude Coffee Table 46-Inch Wooden Gas Fire Pit Table

If you want a round fire pit table with some character to it, the Wine Barrel Dude Coffee Table is our pick, and it is one of our best sellers. It is a real wine barrel built into a 46-inch fire table, so it brings warmth and a genuine conversation piece at the same time.

Why we like it:

  • Built from real treated wood in a true wine barrel shape, not a barrel-look veneer
  • Every hoop and stave is secured with over 400 screws, so the structure holds up outdoors
  • Finished with two stain coats and a UV-protective layer to resist mold and mildew
  • Rust-resistant galvalume burner surface that stays easy to maintain
  • Removable lid covers the burner and turns the whole top into usable table space
  • The 46-inch ring is wide enough for a standard 10.5-inch dinner plate
  • An access door in the base hides the propane tank out of sight
  • Adjustable flame height, and it runs on either liquid propane or natural gas
  • Made in the USA

Things to consider:

  • It is real wood, so it will weather over time. That is part of the look, but a cover helps if it lives outdoors year round.
  • Fire glass is not included. Around 25 lbs is the recommended fill for this burner.
  • Pick your fuel at checkout. The liquid propane model houses a standard tank in the base, and the natural gas model needs a gas line run to it.

Best Budget Propane Fire Pit

Propane fire pits range widely in price. The main drivers are the quality of the burner material, where it was manufactured, and what the body is made of.

Endless Summer 30-inch square black steel LP fire pit table with slate finish top

In photo: Endless Summer 30-Inch Square Steel LP Fire Pit Table

At the budget end you are usually looking at a stainless steel burner and a steel or aluminum body. You give up some refinement compared to a cast concrete table, but a well-built one still lasts for years.

Our pick is the Endless Summer 30-Inch Square Steel Fire Pit Table.

Why we like it:

  • Clean square design in black steel that works with most patio furniture
  • 30,000 BTU, which is real warmth for a table this size
  • Holds a standard 20 lb. propane tank inside the base, so nothing sits out beside it
  • Hidden control panel behind an easy-open door, with a manual ignition knob that needs no batteries
  • Slate-finish steel top resists stains and scratches
  • Black fire glass and a protective cover are both included
  • At about 50 lbs it is light enough for two people to position without help

Things to consider:

  • Assembly is required, and a manual is included.
  • It runs on propane only, so there is no natural gas version of this one.
  • The one-year warranty is shorter than you get on the premium concrete tables in this guide.

7. Best fire pit grill

A fire pit grill does two jobs at once: it is the fire everyone gathers around, and it is the surface you cook on. Our pick is the Arteflame Platinum Fire Pit Grill.

Arteflame Platinum 40-inch corten steel fire pit grill with a solid steel cooktop ring

In photo: Arteflame Platinum 40-Inch Euro Base Fire Pit Grill

Why we like it:

  • The fire sits in the center and you cook on the steel ring around it, so several people can cook at once
  • Half-inch carbon steel cooktop with a precision airflow system, which holds heat evenly instead of giving you hot and cold spots
  • Griddle and grill on the same surface, from searing steaks to cooking breakfast
  • Burns wood or charcoal
  • Stainless steel firebowl, which is the part that has to survive the weather
  • Choose a stainless steel base or powder-coated corten steel in four colors
  • Sold in accessory bundles, so you can start with the basics or add the rotisserie, pizza oven and cover up front

Things to consider:

  • Pick your accessory bundle at checkout. Adding pieces later costs more than taking the larger bundle at the start.
  • A solid cooktop cooks differently from a grate. There are no grill marks and no flare-ups, which most people prefer once they adjust to it.
  • It stands 40 inches tall and 40 inches wide, so measure the space before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a natural gas fire pit and a propane one?

Where the fuel comes from. Natural gas runs off a permanent line, so the fire pit stays where it is plumbed and never runs out. Propane runs off a tank, usually a 20 lb bottle hidden inside the base, so the unit can move but the tank has to be swapped. Most models are built for one or the other, and going between them takes the manufacturer's own conversion kit.

What is a smokeless fire pit, and does it really not smoke?

It is a double-walled wood burner that draws air up between the walls and feeds it back over the fire, so more of the smoke burns off instead of drifting into your face. It is less smoke rather than no smoke, and it only works properly on dry wood. Wet or resinous wood defeats the whole mechanism.

What is the difference between a fire pit and a fire pit table?

A usable surround and a chosen height. A fire pit table gives you a ledge wide enough to set a drink down and sits at either coffee height or dining height. A fire pit is the fire on its own. Pick by how the seating works: coffee height for lounge chairs, dining height for a table people eat at.

What is a fire pit kit?

The burner, pan and ignition supplied on their own, for an enclosure you build yourself in stone, block or poured concrete. You get the exact dimensions and finish you want, and you take on the build. A finished fire pit arrives complete and decides those things for you.

How much heat does a fire pit actually give off?

Enough to make a seating circle usable, and the BTU figure alone will not tell you how much. Wind, how close the chairs sit, the shape of the burner and how high the flame is run all change what people feel. Read BTU as one input rather than the answer.

What is the difference between an ethanol and a gel fire pit?

The fuel and how it is fed. Ethanol burns liquid bioethanol from a burner tray you fill. Gel burns a canned gel fuel you drop in and light. Ethanol gives the larger and more controllable flame; gel is the simpler and smaller of the two. Neither one needs a gas line or a tank.
