A Radiant Tube Heater for Shops, Warehouses and Covered Patios

This is a gas-fired low-intensity infrared tube heater, the same class of equipment used to heat warehouses, manufacturing floors, aircraft hangars and vehicle service centers. Roberts-Gordon builds it. It also works over a covered patio, which is how most people find it.

Infrared heat works differently from a forced-air furnace. Instead of warming the air, which then drifts off or stratifies at the ceiling, the tube radiates directly onto floors, equipment and people. In a building with high ceilings or a door that keeps opening, that is the difference between heating the space and heating the outdoors.

Six outputs, 40,000 to 150,000 BTU. The tube length follows the output: 11 ft 6 in at 40,000 BTU up to 41 ft 6 in at 150,000. Recommended mounting height climbs with it, from 8 ft on the smallest to 20 ft on the largest, so the ceiling you have narrows the choice before anything else does.

Straight tube or U-tube. This is the straight version, a single run. If you do not have 20 to 40 ft of clear ceiling to run it along, the U-Tube model folds the same burner into roughly half the length. Same heat, half the run.

Vented or unvented. Outdoors and in open covered areas it runs unvented. Indoors it can be vented through a 4 in flue, or run unvented if the space has enough ventilation air. Code sets that figure: unvented infrared heaters need at least 4 CFM of outdoor air per 1,000 BTU/hr, so a 100,000 BTU unit needs 400 CFM. Worth settling with your installer before you pick an output.

On sizing. Roberts-Gordon does not publish a square-foot rating for these, and that is deliberate rather than an omission. Coverage depends on mounting height, ceiling height and how much heat the building loses, so these are sized with a heat loss calculation rather than off a chart. Runs on natural gas or propane, fires on direct spark ignition with no standing pilot, and is CSA and ANSI certified. Made in the USA.
