Dimplex Ignite Built-In Electric Fireplaces: IgniteXL, XL Bold, Evolve, Ultra and Aspire

Ignite is the Dimplex family of built-in electric fireplaces, and every model in it is meant to be framed into a wall rather than hung on one. The original IgniteXL is a wide linear unit with a clean face, and the newer models build on it in different directions: more heat and app control, multi-sided viewing, or a traditional log fire.

Which Ignite Model Fits Your Project

• IgniteXL. The clean-face linear original, with the Multi-Fire XD flame over an acrylic ember bed and hidden backlit controls. It plugs in with the included plug kit or hardwires, and it is specified for homes as well as hotel lobbies and restaurants. Dimplex also rates it for covered outdoor installation.
• Ignite Evolve. A linear unit that adds Wi-Fi control through the Dimplex Flame Connect app, a layered media bed with driftwood and tumbled glass, and a Dimplex rating for covered outdoor installation.
• Ignite XL Bold. Installs front-facing, left corner, right corner or bay, and up to five units link into one continuous flame with the optional linking kit. It is also rated for covered outdoor use.
• Ignite Ultra. A linear fireplace with a log set that pulses with the flame, a choice of crackling sounds, and a switch between Dynamic-Fire and Multi-Fire flame effects. It installs front-facing, corner or bay.
• Ignite Aspire. A firebox with traditional proportions rather than a linear one, sized to fit a standard fireplace opening, with the same pulsing logs and sound options as the Ultra.

Framing Depth Decides What Fits

The IgniteXL and Evolve recess flush into a 2x6 wall, which gives 5.5 inches of framing depth, and go in partially recessed in a 2x4 wall with the optional trim kit. The Ultra and Aspire need a much deeper opening, around 15 and 18 inches respectively, which usually means a framed bump-out or an existing fireplace opening. Check the framing dimensions on each product page before the wall is built.

Heat and Wiring

Every Ignite model runs the flame with or without heat. On 120V most produce about 5,000 BTU, and hardwired to 240V they reach about 8,530 BTU, which Dimplex rates for up to 1,000 square feet. If you want the higher output, have an electrician confirm a 240V circuit before the drywall goes up, because adding one later is expensive.

Indoor and Covered Outdoor Use

The IgniteXL, Ignite Evolve and Ignite XL Bold can go outdoors under a covered patio. Dimplex requires an overhang that keeps rain off the fireplace, sets a rule for how far the overhang must project, recommends a ground-fault protected circuit, and warranties these models for one year outdoors against five years indoors. The Ignite Ultra and Aspire are for indoor use only.
