Description

A Three-Sided Built-In Electric Fireplace With Glowing Logs

The Dimplex Ignite Ultra is a built-in linear electric fireplace. It fits into a framed opening in the wall, the way a wall oven fits into cabinetry, and its fire shows through glass on the front, on one end or on both. Logs that glow from inside sit on a bed of glass embers. The flames run with or without the heater, so it is worth switching on in July as well as January. It comes in five widths, from a bedroom wall to a long media wall, and it is for indoor rooms only.

One Firebox Installs Four Ways: Front, Either Corner or Bay

The same unit sets up front-facing, as a left or right corner, or as a bay with glass on three sides. You decide at installation: the installer removes the side panel on each end that will be open, then fits the magnetic side trim. The side glass goes in on every installation, even front-facing. It suits a peninsula wall, a room divider or the corner of an open floor plan, where a front-only fireplace would show a blank box from the side.

Two Flame Effects and Logs That Glow From Inside

Dimplex Authorized Dealer

Dimplex calls the flame system Flex-Flame. It ships with the Dynamic-Fire flicker rod installed, and a second rod in the box gives the Multi-Fire effect, so you can try both and keep the one you prefer. The logs plug in one by one, glow from inside and pulse in time with the flames, and you can rearrange them or leave some out. The remote has nine flame themes, including a Midnight mode with flames but no glowing logs or embers, and a Dusk mode with glowing logs and embers but no flames.

The Heater Runs on a Thermostat, or Not at All

Heat comes from a fan-forced ceramic heater that blows warm air out through the front, and a thermostat holds the room between 64 and 78°F. On a 120 volt plug it runs at 1,500 watts. Hardwired to 240 volts it runs at 2,500, the setup to choose if you want real warmth. Dimplex rates it as supplemental heat for up to 1,000 square feet with a 9 foot ceiling, so it takes the chill off a room rather than replacing your furnace. Turn the heat off from the remote whenever you only want the flame, or have the installer disable the heater for good during installation.

Control It From the Remote, the Panel or the App

A Bluetooth remote with a wall mount comes in the box, and three buttons on the fireplace cover the basics. Over Wi-Fi, the Dimplex Flame Connect app adds more flame colors, saved mood settings, heat schedules and more crackling sounds. It is also the only place the set temperature is displayed. One remote can run several fireplaces, which matters if you link units side by side.

Best for Feature Walls, Room Dividers and Media Walls

The five widths are 50, 60, 74, 88 and 100 inches, and units can be linked side by side for a longer run, with the linking brackets in the box. Under a TV, we recommend a fireplace at least as wide as the TV, so the fire does not look undersized beneath the screen. It can go in a bathroom too, provided the circuit is GFCI protected and the unit sits away from the shower and tub. Dimplex also shows the long sizes in restaurants and reception areas.

Frame It 28 Inches High and 15 Deep, and Keep It Indoors

The framed opening is 28 inches high and 15 inches deep on every size. The width is 50 3/4, 60 3/4, 74 3/4, 88 3/4 or 100 3/4 inches, and for linked units you add the widths together. The fireplace is not load-bearing, so frame a header that keeps the weight of the wall off its top. The trim is designed to meet 1/2 inch drywall or cement board. The wiring connects at the back, top right corner, so run power there before the wall closes. The included plug kit is for 120 volts only; 240 volts must be hardwired, and Dimplex recommends a dedicated 15 amp circuit either way.

For the best view, Dimplex recommends the bottom of the unit no higher than 40 inches off the floor, and the top must sit at least 24 inches below the ceiling. A TV, mantel or artwork above is fine if its own manufacturer allows installation over a heater. In normal heat mode, Dimplex says surfaces 10 inches above stay below 40°C (104°F). Lifting it into the opening is a two-person job. And it stays indoors: the Dimplex owner's manual says not to use the Ultra outdoors. For a covered patio, the IgniteXL, Ignite Evolve and Ignite XL Bold are the Ignite models rated for covered outdoor installation.

Optional Accessories

For extra or replacement embers, the Dimplex Tumbled Glass Ember Bed Media Kit is the tumbled glass Dimplex lists for the Ignite Ultra.

Dimplex Ignite Ultra 3-Sided Built-In Linear Electric Fireplace with Logs FAQ's

Can the Dimplex Ignite Ultra be installed outdoors?

No. The Dimplex owner's manual says not to use the Ignite Ultra outdoors, and that includes covered patios. If you want an Ignite on a covered porch or patio, the IgniteXL, Ignite Evolve and Ignite XL Bold are rated for covered outdoor installation under an overhang. Indoors, the Ultra can go in a bathroom on a GFCI-protected circuit, away from the shower and tub.

What size opening does the Dimplex Ignite Ultra need?

Every size needs a framed opening 28 inches high and 15 inches deep. The width is 50 3/4 inches for the 50, 60 3/4 for the 60, 74 3/4 for the 74, 88 3/4 for the 88 and 100 3/4 for the 100. For linked units, add the widths together. The fireplace is not load-bearing, so the framing above it has to carry the wall.

Does the Ignite Ultra plug in or does it need to be hardwired?

Either, at 120 volts. It comes with a plug kit for a grounded 120 volt outlet, where it draws 12.5 amps at 1,500 watts. For the full 2,500 watts it has to be hardwired to 240 volts, where it draws 10.4 amps. Dimplex recommends a dedicated 15 amp circuit in both cases and says not to use an extension cord.

Can you mount a TV above the Dimplex Ignite Ultra?

Yes, as long as the TV's manufacturer allows installation above a heater. Dimplex says surfaces 10 inches above the fireplace stay below 40°C (104°F) in normal heat mode, provided nothing blocks the heater's air inlet and outlet. Keep the top of the fireplace at least 24 inches below the ceiling.

Can you use the Ignite Ultra without heat?

Yes. The flames, logs and ember bed all run with the heater off, so you can use it all year. Turn the heat off from the remote for an evening, or hold a button on the onboard controls for 10 seconds to disable heat until you switch it back. An installer can also disconnect the heater permanently during installation, though Dimplex does not recommend that for seasonal use.

What is the difference between the Dimplex Ignite Ultra and the Ignite XL Bold?

The Ultra is the deeper, taller firebox with glowing logs, and it is indoor only. Both come in widths from 50 to 100 inches and can show their fire on three sides. The Ultra is 14 1/2 inches deep and 27 1/2 inches tall, with logs that glow from inside and two swappable flame effects. The XL Bold is about 12 1/8 inches deep and 23 7/8 inches tall, and it is rated for covered outdoor installation, which the Ultra is not. The Ultra sits at a somewhat higher price.
