Dimplex Electric Fireplaces: Built-In, Insert and Water Vapor Models

Dimplex has spent more than 50 years developing electric fireplace technology, and it holds patents on the flame effects that set its fireplaces apart, including the Opti-Myst water vapor flame. A Dimplex electric fireplace makes its flame with light rather than fuel, so it needs no gas line, no chimney and no venting. The line covers linear built-ins for a media wall, traditional fireboxes and inserts for an existing fireplace opening, and Opti-Myst models that build the flame out of lit water vapor.

LED Flame or Water Vapor

Most Dimplex models layer LED flame and ember effects behind glass, with color and brightness you can adjust. Dimplex Opti-Myst water vapor fireplaces work differently: an ultrasonic mist rises through the flame bed and is lit from below, so the flame and smoke have real depth rather than sitting on a flat panel. The two Opti-Myst models sold online, the Aura and the Revive, refill from a pull-out drawer at the front.

Which Dimplex Format Fits Your Space

Linear built-ins. The Dimplex Ignite family is made up of wide, recessed units for a framed wall or media wall, including 3-sided models that show the flame on the ends as well as the front.
Traditional fireboxes. The Deluxe and Revillusion fireboxes have the proportions of a classic masonry fireplace, with log sets and brick-look interiors, and fit into an existing opening or a framed one under a mantel.
Inserts and log sets. Dimplex electric fireplace inserts and plug-in log sets convert a wood-burning fireplace you no longer use, usually with little more than an outlet nearby.
Water vapor. The Opti-Myst Aura built-in and the Opti-Myst Revive insert make the flame out of lit mist, and both refill from a pull-out drawer.

Heat and Power

Almost every model here carries a fan-forced heater, and the flame runs with the heat on or off, so you can enjoy it through the summer. Treat the heat as supplemental, sized for the room the fireplace faces rather than the whole house. Many models plug into a standard 120V outlet and can also be hardwired, and on dual-voltage units hardwiring to 240V raises the heat output. Check each product page for the wiring options and the figures at each voltage.

Dimplex Outdoor Electric Fireplaces

Three Ignite models are rated by Dimplex for covered outdoor installation: the IgniteXL, Ignite Evolve and Ignite XL Bold. Each needs an overhang that keeps rain off it, and Dimplex warranties them for one year outdoors against five years indoors. Outdoors, moving air carries warmth away, so buy one for the flame and pair it with overhead patio heaters if the seating needs to stay warm.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dimplex Electric Fireplaces

Which Dimplex electric fireplace is best for my space?

Pick the format that fits your wall. For a media wall or a new framed wall, an Ignite linear built-in. For a traditional look under a mantel, a traditional firebox such as Revillusion. To convert a wood-burning fireplace you no longer use, a fireplace insert or a plug-in log set. For the most lifelike flame, an Opti-Myst water vapor model such as the Aura built-in or the Revive insert.

What is the difference between Dimplex LED and Opti-Myst fireplaces?

The flame. An LED model lights the flame onto a panel behind the glass, while Opti-Myst lights a rising column of ultrasonic water mist, so the flame and smoke have real depth. The tradeoff is upkeep: Opti-Myst needs its water drawer refilled and periodic cleaning. An LED model needs neither.

Can a Dimplex electric fireplace be installed outdoors?

Yes, but only the models Dimplex rates for it: the IgniteXL, Ignite Evolve and Ignite XL Bold, all certified for covered outdoor installation under an overhang that keeps rain off the fireplace. Dimplex sets a rule for how far the overhang must project, recommends a ground-fault protected circuit, and warranties them for one year outdoors against five years indoors. Outdoors, moving air carries the warmth away, so buy one for the flame and add overhead patio heaters if the seating needs to stay warm.

Can I put a Dimplex electric fireplace in my existing fireplace?

Yes. Dimplex fireplace inserts and traditional fireboxes slide into an existing fireplace opening, and plug-in log sets sit inside an open fireplace with no framing at all. Most need only an outlet nearby. Measure the width, height and depth of the opening and compare them with the dimensions on the product page before ordering.

How much heat does a Dimplex electric fireplace put out?

On a standard 120V outlet, the models here produce roughly 3,900 to 5,100 BTU, enough to take the chill off the room the fireplace faces. Dual-voltage models hardwired to 240V reach about 8,500 to 9,200 BTU. The heat is supplemental, not a replacement for your home's heating, and the flame runs with the heat off, so you can use it year-round.
