The Lexington Hearth Federal Non-Combustible is a wall-mounted cast mantel shelf carrying the dentil molding and beaded detail of Federal-period millwork, 6.5 inches deep, in 60 and 72-inch lengths. It is a historical profile reproduced in a material that can sit close to heat.

Non-combustible is what lets a television go above the fireplace

Cast in Burncrete and certified to ASTM E136, the standard test at 750 degrees Celsius. In Lexington's words the non-combustible option "allows for closer placement to heat sources, making it an excellent choice for safely mounting a TV above the fireplace." A wood mantel sits at whatever clearance your fireplace manufacturer sets, and that clearance is often what pushes a television too high to watch. Your fireplace manual still governs the height.

It is the only period-detailed mantel here that is non-combustible

Dentil molding belongs to painted colonial woodwork, and painted wood is exactly what you cannot put close to a firebox or under a television. Casting the profile in Burncrete is what makes the combination possible: the detail of a Federal mantel with the clearance behavior of stone. If you are restoring a period room and have been told the mantel has to sit higher than looks right, this is the product that solves it.

Cast weight is not published for this model, so treat it as a two-person lift, so fix the bracket into framing

The bracket carries the whole weight, so it has to reach structural framing rather than drywall anchors. Bracket, hardware, touch-up kit and manual all ship with it.

Hand-painted, so no two are identical, and custom colors are available

Luna, Avocado and Raven are the three standard colors. Lexington casts and paints each one by hand and states that there will be minor variances in color, weight and final dimensions. That is the nature of the product, not a defect. They will also produce custom colors and lengths on request, so contact us before ordering if the standard range does not suit. Order a Architect color sample first either way: what you pay for it is credited back when you buy the mantel.

Best for colonial, Federal and Georgian rooms, and period restorations with a television above the fireplace

The Federal suits a house with dentil cornices, picture rails or six-panel doors, where a plain beam would coexist rather than match. Its three colors are painted finishes rather than wood tones, which is correct for the period: Lexington notes that crisp white-painted wood is common in Federal homes.
