Large Electric Fireplaces

A large electric fireplace is a wide electric firebox built for a big wall, a great room or a media wall under a large TV. Nothing burns, so it needs no vent, flue or gas line. Most recess into the wall or hang on it, and several are rated for covered outdoor spaces. Size it to the wall and the screen rather than to the heat, because a wider unit looks bigger without getting much warmer.

A Large Electric Fireplace Starts at 60 Inches

We call an electric fireplace large when it comes in at least one size 60 inches wide or more. That is the point where a linear unit stops reading as an accent and starts reading as the wall itself, and it is where shoppers start searching by size. Everything here meets that line in at least one size, and the widest run to 120 inches. Many come in a range of widths, so a model that starts smaller can still be ordered big on its product page. If you want something compact, see our small electric fireplaces.

Size It to the Wall and the TV

Width is a proportion decision before it is a product decision. If a TV goes above, choose a fireplace at least as wide as the screen. A narrow fireplace under a wide TV looks like an afterthought, and the flame ends up as a stripe under a black rectangle. Then leave some wall on either side of the fireplace, so it sits in the wall rather than filling it edge to edge. Our fireplaces to install under a TV cover the clearance between the two.

Some Models Link Together for an Even Longer Fire

When one unit is not long enough, a few are built to join end to end. The Dimplex Ignite XL Bold links up to five units into one continuous flame, though the 100-inch size cannot be linked. Two or more SimpliFire Tritons join with the Triton Linking Kit, and in a run of three or more, the units with both ends open go in the middle so the fire reads as one line rather than separate boxes. Each linked Triton still needs its own circuit, and every unit in the run must be set to the same heater voltage. Water vapor works the same way: the Dimplex Opti-Myst 500 cassette is 20 inches long, and several connect into one long mist flame that runs from a single remote. See all water vapor fireplaces.

A Wider Fireplace Is Not a Warmer One

This is the part that surprises people. The heater in an electric fireplace is a separate fan-forced unit, and it does not grow with the firebox. Touchstone rates both the Sideline 60-Inch and the Sideline 100-Inch at 5,000 BTU. Most models here land around that figure on a standard 120V outlet. The ones that can be hardwired to 240V give more, up to about 10,000 BTU depending on the model. Either way, a large electric fireplace is supplemental heat for the room it is in. You are buying the flame at scale, and the warmth is a bonus.

Plan the Wall Before the Fireplace Arrives

Nearly every model here is a built-in, and a big built-in is a framing job. Read the rough opening, the depth and the weight on the product page and in the manual before the wall goes up, because a wider firebox needs a wider, squarer opening and a plan for lifting it in. Check the power too: some plug into an outlet you place inside the framing, and others must be hardwired, which is electrician work, and a 240V install needs its own circuit. Several of these are rated for covered outdoor spaces, and the manual for each one says exactly where.

Three-Sided and See-Through Formats Get Big Too

Large is not only single-sided. Three-sided models like the Modern Flames Orion Multi finish a peninsula or a room divider, and see-through models show the same flame in two rooms. Each needs a different opening, so choose the format at framing, not at delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions about Large Electric Fireplaces

What size counts as a large electric fireplace?

We count a model as large when it comes in at least one size 60 inches wide or more, which is where shoppers start searching by size and where a linear unit starts to read as a wall feature. The widest models here go to 120 inches. Many come in several widths, so check the size options on the product page.

Is there a 100-inch electric fireplace?

Yes, several. The Touchstone Sideline 100-Inch and the Dimplex IgniteXL 100-Inch are built at that size, and the Dynasty Tempo and Dimplex Ignite XL Bold offer 100 inches among their sizes. A few go further: the Modern Flames Orion Multi and Landscape Pro Multi and the EcoSmart Switch reach 120 inches. Longer still is possible with models that link: the Dimplex Ignite XL Bold joins up to five units (the 100-inch size cannot be linked), and SimpliFire Tritons join end to end with the Triton Linking Kit.

What size electric fireplace should go under my TV?

Choose a fireplace at least as wide as the TV. A narrow fireplace under a wide screen looks undersized, and the screen ends up dominating the wall. Leave some wall on either side of both, and check the manual for the minimum clearance between the top of the fireplace and the TV, since it varies by model.

Does a bigger electric fireplace put out more heat?

Not by much, and sometimes not at all. The heater is a separate fan-forced unit that does not scale with the firebox. Touchstone rates both its Sideline 60-Inch and Sideline 100-Inch at 5,000 BTU. Most models give about 5,000 BTU on a 120V outlet, and those that can be hardwired to 240V give more, up to about 10,000 BTU depending on the model.

Can a large electric fireplace heat a large room?

It can take the chill off, but treat it as supplemental heat rather than the room's heating system. Even the 240V models top out around 10,000 BTU, and the heat comes from a fan that warms the air near the unit. Where the manufacturer publishes a coverage area, it is on the product page. For a big open room, buy a large electric fireplace for the flame and keep your main heating in place.

What is the largest electric fireplace insert?

An insert is sized to the fireplace opening you already have, so the largest one that works is the one that fits your firebox. The models on this page are built-ins and wall-mounted units for a framed wall, not inserts. If you are filling an existing masonry fireplace, see our electric fireplace inserts and measure the opening's width, height and depth before you order.
