Sustainable Hearth electric fireplaces are linear built-ins in multi-sided configurations, so the fire reads from more than one direction. Being electric, they need framing and power and nothing else.

Three-sided or see-through, and why it is not a style choice

These two configurations do different jobs and the difference decides the wall.

A three-sided unit is open on the front and both ends. It sits at the end of a wall or a peninsula and is seen from one room.

A see-through is open on two opposite faces and lives inside a wall, so one firebox finishes the rooms on either side.

If the fireplace has to serve two separate rooms, only the see-through will do it. No amount of clever placement makes a three-sided unit reach a second room.

What the wall has to give you

Depth first. Compare the unit's depth against your framing directly, because a 2x4 wall gives 3.5 inches and a 2x6 gives 5.5, and a fireplace deeper than the cavity cannot recess into it. A see-through usually means a wall built for the fireplace rather than an existing partition, so it belongs in the plan early.

No venting, and honest heat

There is no flue, no gas line and no combustion. The install is framing and power. Heat is supplemental, around 5,000 BTU where a figure is published, which takes the edge off the room rather than heating it. The heater runs independently of the flame, so the fireplace works as a visual feature all year.
