Description

The Longest Ignite XL, for Long Walls and Lobbies

The Dimplex Ignite XL 100-Inch is a linear electric fireplace that goes into the wall instead of hanging on it, so the glass finishes flush with the wall, the way a picture window sits in its frame. At more than eight feet across, it is the longest Ignite XL: a single band of flame for a long living room wall, an open-plan great room, a lobby or a covered terrace. The flame runs with or without heat, and there is nothing to vent.

It Recesses Flush Into a 2x6 Wall With No Venting

Dimplex frames the 100-inch into an opening 100 5/8 inches wide and 16 inches tall. A 2x6 wall gives the 5 1/2 inches of depth it needs to sit fully flush. A 2x4 wall gives 3 1/2 inches, so the fireplace stands partly out from the wall, and Dimplex's XLFTRIM100 trim kit covers the exposed sides. Because it is electric, there is no chimney, gas line or venting to plan around. The factory trim suits drywall or tile; take it off for a trimless edge against stone or brick.

Rated for Covered Outdoor Spaces, Under an Overhang

Dimplex Authorized Dealer

Dimplex certifies the Ignite XL for outdoor areas under an overhang that keeps direct water off it. For the warranty, the overhang's height above the bottom of the fireplace can be at most three times its projection, so one 9 feet up must reach 3 feet out on all sides. Mount it at least 5 inches off the ground, on a ground-fault protected circuit as Dimplex recommends. The warranty is five years indoors and one year outdoors.

Outdoors, a fan heater warms air that the breeze then carries away, so buy it outside for the flame. To keep people warm on the patio, pair it with overhead electric patio heaters, which warm people directly and keep working in a breeze.

The Heat Is Optional, and the Flame Runs on Its Own

The heater is fan-forced: a ceramic element warms air and a fan sends it out along the front edge, so the face has no grills. It runs at 1,500 watts on a standard outlet and 2,500 watts hardwired to 240 volts, which is supplemental heat for the room it is in, not a furnace replacement. With the heat off, the flame and ember lights run on their own.

Best for a Long Wall, a Lobby or a Covered Terrace

At about 101 inches wide with its trim, the 100-inch is for walls that would make any shorter fireplace look lost: a long living room or great room wall, a restaurant or hotel lobby, or the back wall of a covered terrace. Even a 100-inch TV, at about 87 inches wide, is narrower than this fireplace, so screen size is never the limit. If the wall is shorter than about nine feet, the Ignite XL 74-Inch will look better proportioned.

Settle the Wiring and the Opening Before the Wall Closes

The power cable enters at the bottom right of the firebox, so plan the framing to route it there and leave about 18 inches of slack. Decide on 120 or 240 volts before the drywall goes up: the plug kit works only at 120 volts, and 240 volts needs a 4-wire hardwired supply. Dimplex recommends a dedicated 15-amp circuit either way.

The fireplace is not load-bearing, so frame the opening to carry the wall above it. Stone or brick can overlap the opening by 1/2 inch at most, or it blocks the warm air. Keep furniture and curtains 3 feet from the front and the top 24 inches below the ceiling. For a TV or mantel above, check the temperature chart in the manual. At about 138 pounds and more than eight feet long, it is a two-person lift at minimum, so plan the delivery and the carry before the day.

Dimplex Ignite XL 100-Inch Built-In Electric Fireplace (XLF100) FAQ's

How big an opening does the Ignite XL 100-Inch need?

Dimplex specifies a framed opening 100 5/8 inches wide and 16 inches tall. To sit fully flush the wall needs 5 1/2 inches of depth, which a 2x6 wall gives.

In a 2x4 wall, with 3 1/2 inches, the fireplace stands partly out from the wall and the XLFTRIM100 trim kit covers the sides. Frame the opening to carry the wall's weight, because the fireplace is not load-bearing.

Can the Dimplex Ignite XL be installed outdoors?

Yes, under cover. Dimplex certifies it for outdoor areas sheltered by an overhang that keeps direct water off it, and the warranty is one year outdoors against five indoors.

To keep that warranty, the overhang's height above the bottom of the fireplace can be at most three times how far it projects, so an overhang 9 feet up must reach 3 feet out on all sides. Mount it at least 5 inches off the ground; Dimplex recommends a ground-fault protected circuit. Outdoors it is bought for the flame, since the breeze carries fan heat away.

Can the Ignite XL plug in, or does it have to be hardwired?

Either. The included plug kit runs it from a standard 120-volt outlet at 1,500 watts.

For the full 2,500 watts it has to be hardwired to a 4-wire 240-volt supply, and the plug kit cannot be used at 240 volts. Dimplex recommends a dedicated 15-amp circuit and no extension cord.

What size TV can go above the Ignite XL 100-Inch?

Any screen up to 100 inches. We recommend a fireplace at least as wide as the TV above it, and the 100-inch is about 101 inches wide with its trim, while a 100-inch TV is only about 87 inches wide.

For heat, keep the TV out of the warm zones in the temperature chart on page 9 of the manual, and follow the TV maker's guidance on mounting above a heater.

Can I use the flames without the heat?

Yes. The flame and ember lights run with the heater off, so it works in summer, and there is a heat-only mode with the flame off too.

The heat can be disabled from the hidden touch controls. An installer can also pull a jumper on the control board to disconnect the heater permanently for a flame-only installation; keep the jumper if you might want heat later.

What is the difference between the Dimplex Ignite XL and the Ignite Evolve?

They share the same four widths, the same heater, the same outdoor certification and the same warranty. The Evolve adds control through Dimplex's Flame Connect app, more ways to personalize flame speed, color and ember bed, and driftwood in its ember bed.

The Ignite XL is run from its remote and hidden touch controls, uses an acrylic crystal ember bed, and sits at a lower price.
