Napoleon Trivista 3-Sided Electric Fireplace

The Napoleon Trivista three-sided electric fireplace series is open on the front and both ends, so the fire reads from three directions instead of one. What unites the series is that three-sided look; installation options span recessed built-in and surface wall mount, and the built-in models ship with end panels that reconfigure how many faces stay open.

    Napoleon Trivista Three-Sided Electric Fireplaces

Napoleon Trivista is a three-sided electric fireplace: open on the front and both ends, so the fire is visible from three directions rather than one. The models carry the same flame and differ in how they mount.

    Three-sided is not see-through

Worth settling before you plan the wall, because the installations are different. A three-sided unit is open on the front plus both ends and sits at the end of a wall or a peninsula, seen from a single room. A see-through fireplace is open on two opposite faces and lives inside a wall, serving the rooms on either side. If the job is to finish two rooms, a three-sided unit will not do it.

    Primis or Pictura

Primis is 9.5 inches deep and recesses into a framed opening, reaching 10,000 BTU. Its included end panels reconfigure it as three-sided, two-sided or single-sided, so the fireplace does not lock the room plan before the room plan is settled. Best for a finished feature wall where you want the heat to count.

Pictura is 6.5 inches deep and mounts on the wall surface, with no opening to frame. Best for a shallow wall or a room you are not ready to open up.

Both are hardwired and need a qualified electrician, so that is not the deciding factor. Depth, heat and configurability are.

    Heat and everyday use

Up to 10,000 BTU on the Primis and 5,000 on the Pictura. Supplemental in both cases. The heater runs independently of the flame, which is why most owners use these as a year-round visual feature and switch the heat on only when the evening calls for it.

Frequently Asked Questions about Napoleon Trivista 3-Sided Electric Fireplace

    What does three-sided mean here?

Open on the front plus both ends, which manufacturers also call a bay. It sits at the end of a wall or a peninsula and is seen from one room. That is different from a see-through fireplace, which is open on two opposite faces and passes through a wall to serve two rooms.

What is the difference between the Primis and the Pictura?

Depth, heat, and how many faces you can open. The Pictura is 6.5 inches deep and mounts on the wall surface. The Primis is 9.5 inches deep, recesses into a framed opening, and reaches 10,000 BTU against the Pictura's 5,000. Both are hardwired and both need a qualified electrician, so that is not a difference. Choose the Pictura where the wall is shallow or you do not want to open it, and the Primis where you want it flush in a finished wall, want the heat to count, or want to choose how many sides are open.

Can I convert it to single-sided or two-sided?

On the Primis, yes. Its included end panels configure it as three-sided, two-sided or single-sided, which is unusual and makes it suit a project that is not fully drawn yet. The Pictura is the three-sided and corner unit and is not reconfigured the same way. Decide the configuration before install, since it changes the framing.

    Does it need special framing?

The Primis does, to the manufacturer's opening dimensions. At 9.5 inches deep it needs more than a 2x4 wall gives you, so expect a furred-out or purpose-built wall. The Pictura at 6.5 inches needs no framing at all, because it mounts on the surface. Both still need an electrician.

How much heat does it produce?

Can the flame run without heat?

Yes, on both. The heater is independent of the flame, so the fireplace works as a visual feature year round and the heat is switched on only when wanted.
