Empire Vented Gas Log Sets

Empire vented gas log sets burn in a wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney, with the damper held open by a damper clamp so the flame can rise tall like a wood fire. This collection spans Slope Glaze and Elite Radiant burners with refractory, ceramic fiber and Burncrete log sets, in natural gas and propane.

Empire Vented Gas Logs for a Working Chimney

Empire certifies its vented log sets to ANSI Z21.60 as decorative gas appliances, for installation only in a solid-fuel burning fireplace: masonry or factory-built. The chimney carries the exhaust away, which is what lets the flame burn tall and yellow, and it is also where much of the heat goes. Choose vented when the fire is mostly for the look. For heat that stays in the room, the vent-free Slope Glaze is on the main Empire gas logs page.

    Slope Glaze or Elite Radiant

    • Slope Glaze vented burner. Rated up to 75,000 BTU in the 24- and 30-inch sizes, and the burner with the most log styles here: Birch Burncrete, Ponderosa, Super Sassafras and Super Stacked Wildwood.
    • Elite Radiant vented burner. Built around a radiant fiber heat sink instead of a sand bed, and rated up to 65,000 BTU in the 30-inch size. Empire says it radiates more heat back into the room on less fuel than a standard vented burner. Its manual approves two log sets only: Pioneer in refractory and Kensington Forest in ceramic fiber.

    What a Vented Installation Needs

A damper clamp holds the chimney damper open so it cannot close while the logs burn, and the Slope Glaze burner ships with one. While the fire is lit, any glass doors on the fireplace stay open and a fireplace screen stays in place. Empire does not approve a thermostat on a vented log set, so control it by hand, by wall switch or by remote. Empire requires a qualified installer for the gas connection.

Natural Gas or Propane, and Both Convert

Choose the fuel on the product page. Unlike the vent-free Slope Glaze, both vented burners can change fuel later. The Slope Glaze manual includes propane and natural gas conversion steps, and Empire lists propane conversion kits for the Elite Radiant.

Frequently Asked Questions about Empire Vented Gas Log Sets

What fireplace do Empire vented gas logs fit?

A wood-burning fireplace with a working chimney, either masonry or factory-built. Empire certifies its vented log sets as decorative gas appliances for installation only in a solid-fuel burning fireplace, so they do not go in a sealed direct vent unit or a vent-free firebox.

Do Empire vented gas logs need a damper clamp?

Yes. The chimney damper has to stay open while the logs burn, and Empire requires a damper clamp so it cannot close by accident. The Slope Glaze vented burner ships with one.

Should I choose the Slope Glaze or the Elite Radiant burner?

The Slope Glaze is rated higher, up to 75,000 BTU, and comes with more log styles. The Elite Radiant uses a radiant fiber heat sink instead of a sand bed, and Empire says it radiates more heat into the room on less fuel. It takes only the Pioneer or Kensington Forest log sets.

Can I use a thermostat with Empire vented gas logs?

No. Empire does not approve thermostats on vented decorative appliances. Use a manual valve, a wall switch or a remote instead.

Can Empire vented gas logs be converted from natural gas to propane?

Yes. The Slope Glaze vented manual includes propane and natural gas conversion steps, and Empire lists propane conversion kits for the Elite Radiant. The vent-free Slope Glaze is the one that cannot be converted.

What warranty do Empire vented gas logs carry?

The Elite Radiant carries a limited lifetime warranty on refractory logs and five years on the burner, grate and ceramic fiber logs. The vented Slope Glaze carries three years on its components. Remotes and accessories are covered for one year.
