What makes the format flexible

There is no flue, no gas line and no electrical connection. Ethanol burns to water vapor and carbon dioxide, so nothing needs venting. That is why an ethanol fireplace can sit on an interior wall, in the middle of a room, or outdoors with no infrastructure run to it, which no gas or wood appliance can do.

It is a real fire

Worth stating plainly, because the freedom above can make these sound like a decorative product. Ethanol burns as a genuine flame, with the clearances, the handling rules and the attention a real fire requires. Never refill a burner that is lit or still warm, extinguish with the supplied snuffer rather than water, and keep the manufacturer's clearances to anything combustible.
