Description

A Three-Sided Built-In Fireplace, Indoors or Out

The Dimplex Ignite XL Bold, which Dimplex now markets as the Ignite Bold, is a built-in linear electric fireplace. You can see its flame from the front, from the front and one end, or from all three sides. It sets into a framed opening, so it looks like part of the wall rather than something hung on it. The flame runs with or without heat, it is rated for covered outdoor spaces as well as indoors, and several units can be joined into one long fire.

One Box Covers Front, Corner and Bay Installs

Every Ignite XL Bold ships with open and closed side trims and two side glass panels, so you choose the layout at install: front only, left or right corner, or bay. The framed opening is the same size for all three. The flame window is about 16 inches tall, roughly four inches taller than the slimmer Ignite XL. That extra height is what lets the flame read well from the ends.

Hardwire It to 240 Volts for Full Heat, or Run Flame Only

On 120 volts the heater puts out 5,118 BTU; hardwired to 240 volts it puts out 8,530 BTU. Dimplex rates it as supplemental heat for up to 1,000 square feet. Heat is one button away, and an installer can disable it permanently for a flame-only fireplace.

Dimplex Authorized Dealer

Outdoors It Needs an Overhang That Meets Dimplex's Rule

The Ignite XL Bold is rated for outdoor use under a shelter that keeps rain off it. To keep the warranty, the overhang's height above the bottom of the fireplace can be at most three times its projection. A roof 9 feet up must reach 3 feet out on all sides. Mount it at least 5 inches above the ground, on a ground-fault protected circuit. The warranty is 5 years indoors and 1 year outdoors.

Outdoors, moving air carries fan-forced warmth away quickly, so buy it for the flame. For warmth across a seating area, add overhead patio heaters.

Link Several Units Into One Continuous Fire

The Dimplex Linking Kit joins up to five Ignite XL Bold units side by side, with the end panels removed where they meet and the controls wired together. Every size links except the 100-inch, which can only sit trim to trim beside another unit. Frame the opening to the combined width.

Best for Islands, Room Dividers and Covered Patios

The bay layout suits a peninsula wall or a partition between two rooms, where people see the fire from the side as often as the front. It also suits a covered outdoor lounge where gas is not an option, and long feature walls in lobbies and restaurants when units are linked.

Settle the Framing and Wiring Before the Wall Closes

Frame to the opening sizes in the spec sheet, not to the fireplace. The fireplace is not load-bearing, so nothing should press on its top. Power enters at the top right back corner; route the cable before drywall. Dimplex recommends a dedicated 15-amp circuit, and 240 volts needs a four-wire supply with a neutral. Keep the top at least 24 inches below the ceiling. For a TV above, surfaces 7 inches over the fireplace stay under 104°F in normal heat mode, but follow the TV maker's guidance. Plan on two people to set it in place.

Optional Accessories

  • Dimplex Linking Kit for joining up to five units, 50 to 88 inches, into one fire
  • Dimplex Plug Kit (XLFXDPLUG) for a standard 120-volt outlet instead of hardwiring. It works on 120 volts only, and the fireplace should never run on an extension cord.

Features

  • Seven flame themes, from classic orange to blue accents, and five flame speeds.
  • Eight lighting moods for the media bed and top light, including Prism and Kaleidoscope color cycles you can freeze on a color you like.
  • An ambient light sensor adjusts the firebox lighting to the brightness of the room.
  • Flames run with or without heat, so it can be used year round.
  • Four heat modes: Normal, Heat Boost (full power for 20 minutes), Eco, and fan-only air circulation.
  • Thermostat adjustable from 45°F to 86°F.
  • Timer from 30 minutes to 8 hours, in half-hour steps.
  • Control it from the Dimplex Flame Connect app over Wi-Fi, the included remote, or touch controls hidden at the top right of the fireplace.
  • Keeps your settings after a power interruption.
  • Built-in self-diagnostics report maintenance and operating issues.
  • Heat can be switched off from the controls or disabled permanently at installation for a flame-only unit.

Dimplex Ignite XL Bold 3-Sided Built-In Electric Fireplace FAQ's

Can the Dimplex Ignite XL Bold be installed outdoors?

Yes, under cover. Dimplex rates the Ignite XL Bold for outdoor installation where an overhang keeps direct rain off it. To keep the warranty, the height from the bottom of the fireplace to the overhang can be no more than three times the overhang's projection, so a roof 9 feet up must reach at least 3 feet out on all sides. Mount the bottom at least 5 inches above the ground and use a ground-fault protected circuit. Outdoors the warranty is 1 year rather than 5, and moving air carries the warmth away, so it is mainly there for the flame. For heat, add overhead patio heaters.

Is the Ignite Bold the same fireplace as the Ignite XL Bold?

Yes. Dimplex renamed the Ignite XL Bold to Ignite Bold, and the model numbers did not change: XLF5017-XD, XLF6017-XD, XLF7417-XD, XLF8817-XD and XLF10017-XD. Manuals and accessories labeled Ignite XL Bold apply to it.

What size opening does the Ignite XL Bold need?

Every size needs an opening 24 1/4 inches tall and at least 11 5/8 inches deep. The width is 49 1/2 inches for the 50-inch, 62 1/4 for the 60, 74 5/8 for the 74, 87 1/4 for the 88 and 99 3/4 for the 100. The opening is the same for front, corner and bay installs, and the sizes assume 1/2-inch drywall. For linked units (up to five, any size except the 100-inch), add the widths together.

Can the Ignite XL Bold plug into a regular outlet?

Only with the optional Dimplex Plug Kit (XLFXDPLUG). Out of the box it is hardwired, to either 120 or 240 volts. The plug kit works on 120 volts only, so the higher heat setting needs a hardwired 240-volt connection with a neutral. Dimplex recommends a dedicated 15-amp circuit and warns against extension cords.

How much heat does the Dimplex Ignite XL Bold put out?

5,118 BTU on 120 volts and 8,530 BTU hardwired to 240 volts, the same at every width. Dimplex rates it as supplemental heat for up to 1,000 square feet. The flame runs without heat whenever you like, and the heater can be disabled permanently at installation.

What is the difference between the Ignite XL Bold and the Ignite XL?

The Ignite XL is slim and front-facing only. The Ignite XL Bold is about 12 inches deep, opens on one, two or three sides, and has a flame window about 4 inches taller. Both are rated for covered outdoor use, put out the same heat, and use the Flame Connect app. Choose the XL for a standard-depth wall; choose the Bold when you can build a deeper chase and want the end glass.
