The phantomSchwank Is a Gas Tube Heater With Wi-Fi Built In

The phantomSchwank is a natural gas infrared tube heater for outdoor spaces. It mounts on a wall or ceiling or hangs from chain, in a 12 foot length at two outputs or a 17 foot length. What sets it apart is control: Wi-Fi is built into the heater, so you run it from an app or a web browser.

Infrared heat warms people and surfaces directly, the way sunshine does, instead of heating the air. That matters outdoors, where warm air drifts away, and Schwank fully encloses the unit to make it wind resistant.

Built for Rows of Seating on Restaurant Patios, Hotel Patios and Golf Ranges

The heat comes off a long tube rather than a single burner head, so it spreads along a run of tables or hitting bays. Schwank sells it for restaurants, hotel patios, golf ranges, and home patios and decks. Its marine-grade aluminum housing also puts coastal locations on that list.

It is approved for outdoor installation only. A covered patio can still qualify depending on how enclosed it is, and the FAQ below gives Schwank's definition.

Coverage Runs From About 200 to About 500 Square Feet, on Two Heat Stages

The phantomSchwank comes in three models, named for their full heat output: 50,000 and 80,000 BTU at 12 feet, and 115,000 BTU at 17 feet. Schwank rates them for up to about 200, 300 and 500 square feet. The two 12 foot models are the same length, so choosing between them is a question of heat, not size.

Every model has its own high and low stage, so the 50,000 BTU model is not a low-output version of the 80,000. It drops to 35,000 BTU on low, and the 80,000 drops to 60,000. High brings the space up to temperature, and low holds it there on less gas.

Wi-Fi Control Runs Schedules, High and Low, and Separate Zones

The app or a web browser switches it on and off, moves it between high and low, and sets a weekly schedule. Group several heaters into zones and a restaurant can run the bar side on one schedule and the dining patio on another.

Plan the Gas Line, a 120V Supply and the Clearance Below Before You Order

This is a gas and electrical installation, and Schwank requires a trained gas service technician to install and service it. Each heater needs a gas supply plus a grounded 120V supply for the blower, the spark ignition and the controls.

What sits underneath decides the mounting height. Hung level, the smallest model needs 42 inches of clearance to anything combustible below it, and the 17 foot model needs 74. Schwank flags vinyl siding, fabrics and some plastics as needing extra protection, so plan around awnings and umbrellas. We suggest measuring below the mounting point before choosing a model, because the clearance grows with output.

The tube grows as it heats. It connects with a flexible stainless steel gas connector certified for tube heaters, not rigid pipe, and hangs on hardware rated for at least 100 pounds. Where wind reaches the heater, Schwank calls for restraints that stop it moving up and down as well as side to side.

Brackets are sold separately in 0, 30 and 45 degree angles, and the 0 degree kit is for ceiling mounting only. Running propane takes the conversion kit matched to your model.
