A Curved, Wall-Hung Fireplace That Burns a Real Flame

The Anywhere Fireplace Chelsea is a wall-mounted ethanol fireplace whose front face curves gently outward, so it reads less like a box on the wall and more like a sculpted piece. It burns liquid bio-ethanol, which means a real fire with no chimney, gas line or outlet behind it. Hang it in a living room, bedroom, den or dining room, choose black, red or stainless steel, and you have a fireplace in a room that was never built for one.

Drywall, Tile, Brick or Stone Only: Never Wood or Wallpaper

The one thing to check before you buy is the wall. Anywhere Fireplace requires a nonflammable surface, so drywall, tile, brick and stone work, and wood paneling or wallpapered walls do not. The Chelsea hangs on the face of the wall; recessing it into the wall or a cabinet isn't an option.

A bracket screws to the wall with four anchors meant for drywall, and you can screw directly into a stud where you hit one. Masonry and tile need their own anchors. Spacers fit to the back of the fireplace, it lifts onto the bracket, and the maker estimates under 30 minutes from box to flame. Have a level, a drill with a 3/8-inch bit, a hammer and a screwdriver on hand.

Plan the Spot: 4 Feet of Clearance and a Shelf Under Any TV

Keep curtains, sofas, cushions and anything else combustible at least 4 feet from the Chelsea. Mounting it beneath a TV is allowed, but only with a nonflammable shelf or mantel in between to carry rising heat away from the screen.

Expect the warmth of a real flame at close range, not room heat. Anywhere Fireplace says plainly that it should not be used as a main source of heat.

Turn the Flame Up or Down With the Burner Lid

A sliding lid on the burner is the only control, and it does three jobs. Opened fully, it gives the tallest flame and the most warmth. Partly closed, it lowers the flame and stretches the fuel; the maker rates it at up to five hours per liter. Closed with the included handle, it starves the fire of air and puts it out.

The Chelsea and the SoHo Differ Only in Shape and Color

Anywhere Fireplace builds the Chelsea and the SoHo on the same burner, to the same size, with the same mounting kit. Choose the Chelsea for its curved, bowed front, and for red, which the SoHo doesn't offer. Choose the SoHo if you prefer a flat, square-edged frame or want high-gloss white.

Order Fuel Too, and Never Refill a Warm Burner

The Chelsea ships without fuel. Stick to liquid bio-ethanol made for ventless fireplaces, not rubbing or denatured alcohol, which the maker warns may give off fumes that aren't safe to breathe. Fill through the funnel until fuel just covers the perforated holes inside the burner and stop there; wipe any spill dry before you light it with a long lighter or match.

Near the end of a fill the flame can shrink until you can barely see it. Close the lid, leave it shut 2 minutes, and give the burner a full 15 minutes to cool before pouring more.
