A Glass-Walled Tabletop Fireplace, Clear From Both Sides

The Anywhere Fireplace Metropolitan is a compact tabletop fireplace that burns liquid bio-ethanol between two panels of tempered glass, so the flame is on show from the front and the back. There's no chimney, gas line or outlet to deal with. It's built for small spaces: a table, a stand, or the firebox of an old fireplace you no longer use, indoors or out.

A Lid on the Burner Sets the Flame Height and Puts It Out

The stainless steel burner has sliding lids worked by a handle. Open them fully when you light it to give the fire plenty of air, then close them partway for a lower flame or all the way to put it out. That makes the Metropolitan easier to tune than a fireplace you can only snuff. Anywhere Fireplace rates a fill at about 2.5 to 3 hours.

Bio-ethanol made for fireplaces burns without smoke, soot or ash, which is why it needs no vent. Use only fuel made for ethanol fireplaces: the manual calls bio-ethanol car fuel or any other unapproved fuel extremely dangerous.

Fits a Tabletop, a Stand or an Unused Fireplace

At its size, the Metropolitan suits a coffee table, a console or a stand, and it's the simplest way to see a real flame again in a fireplace that can't be used. In a patio or terrace setting it works as a tabletop accent. It gives off warmth you can feel up close, but it isn't a heater. If it's going into an old fireplace, check what's around it: a wood mantel, garland or decorations within 4 feet of the flame need to move.

Smaller Than the Lexington, With Glass on Both Faces

The Lexington and the Metropolitan are both liquid ethanol tabletop models from Anywhere Fireplace. The Lexington is longer, comes in six finishes and is put out with a snuffer handle. The Metropolitan is smaller, all stainless steel and glass, has an adjustable burner lid, and sits at a lower price. Choose the Metropolitan for a smaller table or an unused firebox; choose the Lexington for a long dining table or a color.

Fill It Three-Quarters Full and Start With the Lid Open

Fuel is not included, so order it with the fireplace. Fill the burner three-quarters full using a funnel, away from the flame, and wipe up any spill before lighting. Light it with a long match or long lighter. Keep drapes, decorations and anything else flammable at least 4 feet away, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, and never leave it lit unattended. Never add fuel while it's burning or hot: give the burner at least 15 minutes to cool, and don't touch the glass for 15 minutes after it's out.
