A Freestanding Ethanol Fireplace for the Floor or a Table

The Anywhere Fireplace Gramercy is a freestanding fireplace that burns liquid bio-ethanol, so it gives you a real fire with nothing to install: no chimney, no gas line, no outlet. It's a long, low rectangle of powder-coated metal and glass, at home on the floor beside a sofa or on a sturdy console or patio table. It comes in black or white, and it's made for use indoors or out.

Bio-Ethanol Burns Without Smoke, So It Needs No Chimney

The Gramercy burns liquid bio-ethanol made for ventless fireplaces. That fuel leaves no smoke, soot or ash, which is what lets it run in a living room with no flue. You light the vapor above the burner, and after a few minutes of small blue flame it settles into a yellow and orange fire behind two glass panels. To put it out, you use the included handle to slide the burner lid shut.

Stick to fuel made for fireplaces. Anywhere Fireplace warns that ordinary alcohol from a drugstore or home improvement store can give off emissions that aren't safe to breathe, inside or out.

Made for Ambiance, Not as a Main Source of Heat

Anywhere Fireplace says it plainly in the manual: the flame produces heat, but the Gramercy shouldn't be your main source of it. Buy it for the fire itself. It suits an apartment or condo with no fireplace, a den that needs a focal point, a dining room on a winter night, or a covered patio after dark.

Powder-Coated for the Patio, With a Rule for Rain

The finish is powder-coated so the same fireplace can move between a living room and a terrace. If you leave it outside, wait until it has cooled, then either cover it or bring the burner indoors. That keeps rain, leaves and debris out of the fuel reservoir.

The Gramercy Is Wider and Lower Than the Broadway

The Broadway, also from Anywhere Fireplace, is the sculptural one: a curved beige body held between two upright glass panels that stand on the floor. The Gramercy is the more practical shape, a long low box on two short legs, in black or white, that can also go on a table. If you want something that reads as a centerpiece on its own, look at the Broadway. If you want a fire that fits along a wall or on a sturdy table, the Gramercy fits more places.

Assemble It on a Towel and Fill It Off the Furniture

Setup takes a few minutes: turn the base upside down on a towel or carpet, screw on the two legs with the included hex wrench, set the burner in the center and slide the glass into its slots. Fuel isn't included, so order it with the fireplace.

Fill the burner until you can see fuel just above the perforated holes inside it, and never past that. Do it away from stained or painted surfaces, since spilled fuel can damage a finish, and wipe up any spill before lighting. Keep curtains, cushions and furniture at least 4 feet away while it burns, and give it 15 minutes to cool before you move or refill it.
