Description

A 40-inch Classic fire pit from Arteflame with no base, made to sit in masonry or an outdoor kitchen, and you choose whether it is purely a fire pit or a fire pit with a removable steel cooktop you can grill and griddle on. The bowl is made of 10-gauge Corten steel, about 3.4 mm thick, with no paint to chip, and it weathers to a warm rust-colored patina. Arteflame builds it in Phoenix, Arizona.

Add the cooktop and it grills steaks and griddles eggs at the same time

The cooktop version adds a ½-inch steel ring around the fire with 1,250+ sq in of flat cooking surface and a center grill grate that passes 1,000°F. Sear over the grate, then slide food out toward the rim, which runs cooler, to finish or keep warm. Because the steel sits between the fire and the food, grease never drips into the flames, so there are no flare-ups on the griddle.

The round cooktop has no front or back, which changes how a cookout feels: eight or more people can stand around it while dinner cooks.

With no base, it drops into masonry or an outdoor kitchen

This is the same Classic 40-inch bowl without a base, about 12 inches tall. Arteflame offers it for built-in installations, set into a masonry surround or an outdoor kitchen counter, or on a support you build yourself. It needs that support to sit stable, so it is not a stand-alone fire pit as shipped.

Best for a backyard where the fire pit and the grill have to be one thing

Choose it if you want a sculptural centerpiece that also replaces a separate grill, and you mostly cook for a group. If you prefer a different base shape, the same bowl and cooktop come on the Classic 40-Inch Low Round Base Fire Pit. If you never plan to cook on it, the Fire Pit Only version saves the cost of the cooktop. We do not carry the cooktop separately, so if cooking is likely, order the cooktop version now.

Before you order: plan the surface, the seasoning and the warm-up

Set it on pavers, concrete or gravel rather than a wood deck, and check local fire rules and clearances. On the cooktop version, season the steel with the included puck before the first cook and give it 30 to 45 minutes to heat through. The cooktop version is heavy, so plan for freight delivery and a couple of people to place it.

How hot does the Arteflame cooktop get?

The center grill grate sits directly over the fire and passes 1,000°F, which is where you sear. On a 40-inch cooktop Arteflame measured about 450 to 550°F near the inner edge and 250 to 350°F toward the outer rim, so you can sear, cook and keep food warm at the same time. Give the steel 30 to 45 minutes to heat through before you start cooking.

How do you install the Arteflame Classic fire bowl without a base?

Set it into a masonry surround, an outdoor kitchen counter or a support you build, so the bowl is held level and stable. It is about 12 inches tall without a base. Build the surround from non-combustible materials and follow local fire rules and clearances.

Will a Corten steel fire pit rust?

Yes, on the surface, and that is the point. Corten is weathering steel: outdoors it forms a warm, rust-colored patina that protects the steel underneath, so it needs no paint or coating. If you want a bright finish that does not change color, look at the stainless steel Arteflame models instead.

Can an Arteflame 40-inch be converted to gas?

Yes, by a professional installer. The center hole in the 40-inch fire bowl is sized for a 1-inch gas pipe. Conversion parts are not included, so plan for an installer and a gas line run to the spot.

How do you season and clean an Arteflame cooktop?

Treat it like cast iron. Season it with the included seasoning puck, then after each cook scrape it clean while it is still warm and wipe on a light coat of oil. That builds a natural, low-stick patina that improves the more you use it.
