A Vent-Free Outdoor Fireplace That Arrives as One System

The Majestic Vesper 36 is a vent-free outdoor gas fireplace: a stainless steel firebox with a 36-by-27-inch opening, a brick-style interior, and the Lumonessen burner and hand-painted logs that complete it. You choose the fuel and the log style in the options above, and everything ships together, so there is no firebox to build and no chimney to run.

Choose the Interior, the Fuel and the Log Style

The interior comes in two looks. Traditional is stacked brick in straight courses; herringbone sets the bricks in a chevron pattern and reads a little more tailored. Both are concrete refractory panels in the same firebox.

The burner comes in natural gas or propane, and it cannot be converted later, so match it to your gas line. The logs come in three styles: Mountain Oak, fully barked and the darkest; Mezmer, barked with split faces; and Mezmer Split, showing the most pale split wood.

Covered Patios, Porches and Decks, Within Limits

The Vesper is designed for outdoor living spaces: open to the sky, under a roof with up to two walls, or under a roof with three walls as long as at least 30% of the perimeter stays permanently open. Screening the open sides is fine. It can sit on a wood, composite or non-combustible surface, and because it is vent-free there is no flue to route through a roof.

Frame It to the Framing Size, Not the Fireplace Size

The firebox is 42 inches wide, 34 tall and 20 deep. Frame the opening to 42 1/2 by 34 1/4 by 19 3/4 inches, which the manual gives separately from the unit size. Build the enclosure from non-combustible materials, and plan the gas line to the access points on the side of the firebox before the wall is finished.

Plan for Water and Hire a Gas Installer

Water is the thing most outdoor installs get wrong. Where rain can reach the firebox or water can pool, Majestic says a drain pan may be needed, with the structure sloped 1/4 inch per foot toward its drain ports. Majestic makes a drain pan for each Vesper size. The optional mesh door adds stainless steel doors that open for access to the burner. Have a qualified gas installer make the connection and check pressure, since propane needs an external regulator. The Vesper ships by freight and weighs about 140 pounds, so plan for two people to set it.
