The Touchstone Chesmont 50 is an electric fireplace and a surround mantel supplied as a single unit that hangs on the wall. There is no chimney, no gas line and nothing to vent, and the flame runs with or without heat. The three-sided firebox is what sets it apart: you see the flame from the front and from both ends, which is what makes it work on a wall people walk past rather than sit square in front of.

Three Sides of Flame, Which Changes Where It Can Go

A conventional fireplace only reads from directly in front. Open the ends and it works in a hallway, at the end of an open-plan room, or on the wall of a kitchen and living area where people approach it from the side. The firebox measures 43 inches wide by 12 inches tall, and the glass is tempered and cool to the touch.

Six Flame Colors Over Ten Media Bed Colors

Six flame colors and ten media bed colors give sixty combinations, with five light intensity settings and three flame speeds. Crystals and driftwood both come in the box, so you can change what sits under the flame. A built-in timer shuts it off after up to eight hours.

Control It From the App, Alexa, Google Home or the Touchpad

It is Wi-Fi enabled and certified for both Amazon Alexa and Google Home, so the flame and the heat answer to voice. The mobile app gives you the full set of controls, and a touchpad on the front of the unit and a remote both do the same job if you would rather not use either.

Two Heat Settings and a Thermostat, Up to 400 Square Feet

The heater runs at 750 or 1,500 watts with a thermostat, and puts out 5,000 BTU, which is supplemental warmth for a room up to about 400 square feet rather than a replacement for central heating. The flame runs independently, so the fire works through the summer with the heat off.

It Hangs on the Wall, It Does Not Recess

This one mounts on the surface of a finished wall rather than going into it, which is the whole point of the built-in mantel: the mantel is what hides the edges. It is 50 inches wide, 20 3/8 inches tall and 7 1/8 inches deep and weighs 62 lbs, and it plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet or can be hardwired.
