Napoleon Astound Series

Napoleon Astound electric fireplaces are built for both indoor and outdoor installation, which most electric fireplaces are not rated for. Installation options run from recessed built-in to surface wall mount, so the same flame suits a finished feature wall or a room where opening the wall is not on the table.

Napoleon Astound Electric Fireplaces, Indoor and Outdoor Rated

Napoleon Astound is an electric fireplace series rated for indoor and outdoor installation, which separates it from most electric fireplaces on the market. The models share the same flame and differ only in how they mount.

    Built-in or Flexmount

The built-in recesses into a framed opening for a finished, flush result.

The Flexmount does that too, and also hangs on the wall surface with no framing. If you are undecided about opening the wall, or you may take it with you, the Flexmount keeps both options open at the cost of nothing.

Rated for outdoors, with one honest caveat

Both models carry an outdoor rating and still need a covered, protected location.

Be clear about why you are putting one outside. An electric fireplace heats by warming air, and outdoors that air moves away before you feel it. It is bought outdoors for the flame, not the warmth. If you want people to actually feel heat on a patio, pair it with patio heaters, which radiate directly to whoever is sitting there.

    Sizing the heat

5,000 to 10,000 BTU depending on setting. That is supplemental heat, enough to take the edge off a room rather than to carry it through a cold night. The flame runs independently of the heater, so the unit works year round.

Frequently Asked Questions about Napoleon Astound Series

What is the difference between the Astound and the Astound Flexmount?

The flame and the electronics are the same. The Flexmount adds a second installation option: it can be recessed into the wall like the built-in, or hung on the surface with no framing at all. Choose the Flexmount if you are not certain you want to open the wall, or if you may move it later.

    Can the Astound go outside?

Yes, both models are rated for outdoor installation, which is unusual for an electric fireplace. It still needs a covered location and a protected outlet. Understand what you are buying it for, though: an electric fireplace warms air, and outdoors that warmth drifts away. Outside it is bought for the look.

How much heat does it put out?

5,000 to 10,000 BTU depending on the setting, which is supplemental. That is enough to take the edge off a room, not enough to be the only heat source in a cold winter.

Does it need a dedicated circuit?

Check the model's requirement before you plan the install, since it changes with the heat setting you intend to run. This is the single most common thing people discover too late, after the wall is already closed up.

What is involved in recessing one into a wall?

Can it run without the heat?

Yes. The flame and the heater are independent, so it runs as flame only in summer. That is the normal way most people use an electric fireplace for most of the year.
