Description

The Largest Redstone, Built for Wide Hearths

The Modern Flames Redstone 54-Inch is the biggest electric fireplace insert in the Redstone line, made for a wide masonry hearth or a feature wall in a large room. Slide it into an existing fireplace and plug it in, or frame it into a wall and hardwire it. Glowing logs sit over a crystal ember bed, the flame runs with or without heat, and the colors are yours to set.

It Installs as a Plug-In Insert or a Hardwired Built-In

Modern Flames' manual covers both. As an insert, it plugs into an outlet installed inside the existing firebox and stays put by its own weight and friction, with no screws. As a built-in, it goes into a framed opening 50 15/16 inches wide, 32 3/4 inches tall and 12 inches deep, and an electrician hardwires it. Either way it needs its own 15-amp circuit. It is 12 inches deep, deeper than the smaller Redstones.

It ships with a slim 5/8-inch trim fitted and a wider 1 5/8-inch trim in the box. Modern Flames makes no surround kit for the 54, so the wider trim is the most coverage you can add around an oversized opening.

Flame, Embers and Downlight Each Change Color on Their Own

Modern Flames calls it Hybrid-FX. LEDs light the flame, and a separate downlight shines onto the logs. The flame, the ember bed and the downlight each have ten colors plus a fade mode. You set each one separately, so an orange flame can sit over red embers, or the whole fire can go blue. Flame speed has four settings and brightness has five. The flame runs without the heater, so it works in July too.

Heats a Room Up to About 500 Square Feet

The heater has two settings, 733 and 1,465 watts, about 5,000 BTU on high. Modern Flames rates that as supplemental heat for up to 500 square feet. A thermostat holds the room anywhere from 68 to 88°F, and a timer turns everything off after 30 minutes to 8 hours. Think of it as heat for the room you are sitting in, not a replacement for your furnace.

Best for a Wide Masonry Hearth or a Large Room

The 54 is for a big fireplace opening or a long wall where a smaller firebox would look undersized. It is deeper than the other Redstones, so check that your firebox or framing has the room. Modern Flames makes no surround kits for this size, and it has no app control.

Measure the Opening and Plan the Outlet First

Measure your fireplace's width, height and depth at the narrowest point, front and back, and compare them with the opening sizes above. For an insert, you need an outlet at the back or side of the firebox. If there is none, have an electrician add one, because Modern Flames says never to use an extension cord or power strip. Keep a mantel at least 11.8 inches above the glass, and use heat-resistant paint on it. For a more realistic log look, the Modern Flames TruWood Timber Kit swaps in for the standard logs.

Optional Accessories: TruWood Premium Timber Kit, and fireplace mantels to finish the wall.

Modern Flames Redstone 54-Inch Built-in Electric Fireplace Insert (RS-5435) FAQ's

Can the Modern Flames Redstone 54 go into my existing wood-burning fireplace?

Yes. Modern Flames designed it to slide into an existing fireplace, where it plugs into an outlet inside the firebox and stays in place by its own weight, with no screws. Clean out the firebox first, and have an electrician add an outlet at the back or side if there isn't one.

What size wall opening does the Redstone 54 need as a built-in?

Modern Flames lists a finished opening 50 15/16 inches wide, 32 3/4 inches tall and 12 inches deep. As a built-in, an electrician hardwires it on a dedicated 15-amp circuit.

Can I plug the Redstone into a regular wall outlet?

Yes, it runs on 120 volts, but Modern Flames calls for a dedicated 15-amp circuit with nothing else plugged into it. Plug it straight into the wall, never into an extension cord or power strip.

How much space will the Redstone 54 heat?

Modern Flames rates it for supplemental heat in up to 500 square feet. The heater runs at 733 watts on low and 1,465 watts on high, about 5,000 BTU, and a thermostat holds the temperature you set between 68 and 88°F.

Can I mount a TV or a mantel above the Redstone?

Yes. Modern Flames lists the Redstone as safe to install beneath a TV, and its manual asks for at least 11.8 inches between the top of the glass and a mantel or ceiling. If you paint the mantel, use a heat-resistant paint so it doesn't discolor.

What is the difference between the Modern Flames Redstone and the Orion Traditional?

The flame. The Redstone builds its flame from LED light, while the Orion Traditional plays a recording of a real fire on a screen, so it looks closer to the real thing up close. The Redstone sits at the lower price.
