Guide to Dimplex Opti-Myst Water Vapor Fireplaces

This article covers everything you want to know about Dimplex Opti-Myst series Fireplaces including Dimplex Opti-Myst Pro 1000, Dimplex Opti-Myst Pro 500 and Dimplex Opti-Myst 40" and 65" Water Vapor Electric Firebox.

First, we will go over the main features of Dimplex Opti-Myst fireplaces and see what they look like on the video, then we will answer the most frequently asked questions and address the most common problems.

One of The Most Realistic Electric Fireplaces

Dimplex Opti-Myst is a series of electricity-powered fireplaces with water vapor flames. The flame is created by LED lights reflecting off the mist which is produced by Dimplex's ultrasonic technology from regular tap water stored in a container inside the fireplace.

The result is a 3-dimensional flame with smoke that looks very much like a wood-burning fireplace flame. And all that without any real fire or smoke. Pretty great, right?

Opti-Myst fireplaces are safe for you, your kids, pets, and the environment. You can touch the flame without burning yourself and there is no smell, smoke or any emissions whatsoever.

Installation options are plentiful. Because Dimplex Opti-Myst fireplaces don't need any venting and have 3-dimensional flames, there are almost no restrictions in the fireplace design you want to create. A few installation examples include a long linear fireplace, a 2-sided fireplace open to both rooms, a 360-degree fireplace, or a freestanding fireplace.

Dimplex Opti-Myst Pro Cassettes & Firebox Installation

Dimplex Opti-Myst Pro Cassettes & Firebox

Opit-Myst Pro cassettes and firebox are designed to be hardwired into 120V circuit and come standard with an easy-fill water tank that offers 8 hours of continuous operation before refilling is required.

If you don't want to refill the tank and would rather just connect your fireplace to a water line for a "set it and forget it" installation, there is an Optional Plumbing Connection available. It provides continuous water supply complete with overflow safety sensor, automatically shutting off water to prevent leaks.

Even though Dimplex Opti-Myst fireplaces are designed to be hardwired, there is an Optional plug kit available if you need them to be more mobile.

Decorative Accessories

Dimplex Opti-Myst Pro fireplaces don't come with any decorative accessories but they look even more realistic with decorative glowing logs. Decorative logs for the Opti-Myst Pro fireplaces can be found here: Opti-Myst Logs

Alternatively, you can place pretty much anything around the flame, like glass pebbles or rocks. Just make sure to not block the flow of the mist.

Heat function

All Dimplex Opti-Myst Pro Fireplaces come with the crackle of a real wood fire but only one of the Opt-Myst models comes with heat.

Opti-Myst Fireplace with heat is the Opti-Myst 40" Water Vapor Electric Firebox.

All other Opti-Myst models don't have a heat option. However, there is a heater accessory that is designed to fit Opti-Myst Pro cassettes perfectly and can be purchased in addition to them.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dimplex Opti-Myst Pro Cassettes and Firebox

How much does it cost to run my Opti-Myst fireplaces?

Using the national average of 15.21 cents for kW/ hour, the Opti-Myst Pro 500 cassette costs $0.02/hour and Opti-Myst Pro 1000 cassette costs $0.07/hour with the addition of water costs.

Can I install any type of material around the unit, will the moisture affect it?

The moisture will not affect the material you’ve chosen to surround your fireplace with, but in order for the Bluetooth receiver for the remote control to work, it cannot be built into stone/brick/concrete or metal because these materials block the remote signal.

Can I put a custom decorative media around the flame of my Opti-Myst fireplace?

You may place a custom decorative media on the included flat plate, but it must not have the ability to create small particles that could fall into the unit and the mist opening must remain free of any obstructions. Also, the media used cannot have an overall weight exceeding 5lbs as this will cause the media plate to dip slightly in the center. If using a heavily porous material, it is recommended that you examine the material after a few days for any spots or discoloration.

Can I install an Opti-Myst fireplace outside?

The Dimplex Opti-Myst fireplaces are certified for indoor use only.

What cleaning/maintenance is required?

Clean the surface of you Opt-Myst fireplace as needed. All you need is a soft, damp cloth.

Note: Do not use abrasive cleaners on the surface of the unit and do not put plastic components in a dishwasher.

Recommended: bi-weekly cleaning with soap and water of the top cover assembly, sump and transducer. With this cleaning: gently press down the spring found in the fill cap (plumbed units) and water tank to ensure efficiency. If the spring does not return to its former position, wipe the area and attempt the test again. If it still does not ‘spring back’ you may require a replacement.

The air filters should also be checked on a bi-weekly basis for any discoloration or build-up and removed for a gentle rinsing and towel dry when needed. When reinstalling the filters, place the course black filter to face the back of the unit.

 Dimplex Opti-mys Ribbon Fireplace

Is copper plumbing required for hard plumbed installation?

Copper piping is not required if you have a plumber install the Opti-Myst fireplace and he/she brings his/her own materials. If you choose to purchase and use the Dimplex plumb kit, the connection point requires copper piping.

How many levels of flame intensity control are available?

The unit has 7 settings. The voltage to the fan drops from 100% to 30% in 10% increments.

How many levels of audible volume control are available?

There are 8 crackling sound levels on the Dimplex Opti-Myst fireplace but 4 of them are selected using the manual controls on the unit. The fireplace then will remember the setting when using the remote control. If you would prefer no sound, the sound can be muted.

Is a drain required for Opti-Myst fireplace?

No, no drain is required. Here are the safety measures the fireplace contains to prevent any leaks:

(1) Software timer – if the unit is taking too long to fill, the software will time out and shut the water off.
(2) Redundant solenoid valve - solenoid valves rarely fail.
(3) Overflow detection – cuts power to the unit if water is above the maximum line.

Dimplex Opti-Myst Common Problems

Dimplex Opti-Myst Common Problems

We have researched what the common Dimplex Opti-Myst problems are and addressed them with Dimplex, the manufacturer. Here are our findings.

Dimplex Opti-Myst fireplaces raise the humidity in the room.

Yes, it is true but not by a lot. The humidity will be raised by the equivalent of 1 person breathing in a room when you use a 20" cassette (Opti-Myst Pro 500) and 2 people breathing when you use the 40" Opti-Myst Pro 1000 model.

This is a very small amount and will only be noticeable if you install a large fireplace (by connecting several cassettes) in a small room.

Potential health effects of water/moisture being placed into the air.

Dimplex makes sure that the fine water mist is safe and free of any harmful bacteria. All the components that come in contact with water and mist are designed with an anti-microbial additive to prevent the growth of the bacteria.

The water needs to be filled all the time.

At maximum mist level, the 500 and 1000 cassettes will last approximately 8 hours. If you would rather not have to fill the water tank at all you can use our Optional Plumbing Connection Kit. It provides a continuous water supply to the fireplace.

The flame is too low.

The newest version of Dimplex Opti-Myst Pro has fixed this issue. It features an increased flame height. It also has pegs and dividers that control the width of individual flames and change the look of the fireplace from contemporary to traditional.

We've covered quite a bit of information here. Hopefully, now you have a better understanding of the Dimplex Opti-Myst series water vapor fireplaces. They are definitely the most realistic electric fireplace option on the market right now and they are constantly improving.

Dimplex Opti-Myst Pro

Bottom Line

Dimplex Opti-Myst fireplace is the right choice for you if:

  • you want a very realistic looking fireplace that is safe and healthy for people and environment, cost-efficient, and hassle-free;
  • you want a realistic fireplace without any venting, smell, or smoke;

  • you want a safe 360-degree fireplace or fireplace open or 2 or 3 sides;
  • you want a fireplace without any liability for your commercial project.

For the more hands-off operation, we recommend connecting the Opti-Myst fireplace to a water supply using Optional Plumbing Connection Kit.

Dimplex Opti-Myst is not for you if:

  • you have a small room you want to install a fireplace in because it can cause condensation;
  • you don't have easy access to clean tap water because you will have to fill up the tank with filtered water in that case.

Overall, Dimplex Opti-Myst seems like a great choice and you can buy it with confidence because it is covered by a 2-Year Manufacturer warranty.

Hi
We are trying to decide which Opti myst cassette to purchase.
Please could you supply the differences between the 400 or 600 to the 500 or 1000 as the latter is a substantial amount more costly.
Many Thanks

Dyann - November 17, 2021

Hi, Gary!

Water is essential for water vapor fireplaces to work. To quote the article:

“The flame is created by LED lights reflecting off the mist which is produced by Dimplex’s ultrasonic technology from regular tap water stored in a container inside the fireplace.”

It also wouldn’t be able to function as a stove since the “fire” itself does not actually give off heat.

Can you safely use an opti myst fire as a normal electric stove without putting any water in it ?

Dyann - July 9, 2021

Hi, Sue!

Unfortunately, we don’t have the Evandale Opti-Myst Electric Stove in our store. We won’t be able to check its specifications.
