Built-in electric fireplace collection

A built-in electric fireplace is a ventless electricity-powered fireplace imitation that is designed to be installed inside a wall opening.

There are two styles of recessed/built-in electric fireplaces: linear recessed electric fireplaces and recessed electric fireplace inserts that are shaped more like a traditional fireplace.

Linear electric fireplaces built in the wall have this popular long horizontal fireplace look that is perfect for modern interiors.

An electric fireplace insert (firebox) has a more traditional look and feature classic fireplace proportions.

Do Built-in Electric Fireplaces Provide Heat?

Most built-in electric fireplaces come with heaters and can heat 500 - 1000 sq. ft. The heater works independently from the flame effect allowing you to use these fireplaces even in the heat of the summer with the heater turned off.

You can use our collection filters to narrow down your search to only fireplaces that can heat your area.

How to Install a Recessed Electric Fireplace?

Both types of built-in fireplaces, linear and inserts, can be installed into any wall including drywall as well as cabinetry. Basic steps to install a recessed electric fireplace:

  1. Create an opening in the wall.
  2. Rough in the framing opening following the recommended framing dimensions.
  3. Hardwire it in (licensed electrician).
  4. Place the fireplace into the framed opening.
  5. Attach the fireplace to the frame.
  6. Install the decor and front glass and/or frame.

Most recessed electric fireplaces come with a cord to plug them in and an option to hardwire them. Some models are hardwired only. Hardwiring is a preferred method of installation.

We recommend hiring a licensed electrician to properly install your recessed electric fireplace. All wiring needs to be done before installing the fireplace.

Built-in Electric Fireplaces FAQ's

Do built-in electric fireplaces give off heat?

Yes, built-in electric fireplaces can give off heat. Most have built-in heaters that can be used to warm a 400 sq. ft. room and some hardwired models can provide double that heat. Most built-in electric fireplaces allow you to control the heat output, including the option to run the fireplace without any heat at all, just displaying the flame effects for ambiance. This makes them versatile for year-round enjoyment, providing heat when you need it and visual appeal without additional warmth during warmer months.

How much does it cost to do a built-in electric fireplace?

The cost of installing a built-in electric fireplace can vary significantly based on several factors, including the model of the fireplace, the complexity of the installation, and any additional construction or remodeling needed. Here are some general cost ranges:

Purchase Price: Built-in electric fireplaces typically range from about $500 to $5,500 depending on their size, features, and the realism of the flame effects.
Installation Costs: Installing a built-in unit can cost anywhere from $200 to $2,000 or more. This variation is largely due to whether you need to modify existing structures or build a new surround. Basic installations in pre-existing spaces may be at the lower end, while constructing a new wall or custom cabinetry will increase costs. Check out our DIY Fireplace Surrounds collection to find solutions that can save you on installation.
Additional Expenses: Aside from the fireplace itself and installation, other costs may include electrical work (if additional wiring or outlets are needed), materials for framing or finishing, and possibly a permit depending on local regulations.
Overall, a typical budget for a built-in electric fireplace project, including the unit and installation, might range from $700 to over $7,500, depending on the scope and specifics of your project. It's wise to get multiple quotes from contractors and to choose a fireplace model that fits your aesthetic preferences and heating requirements.

Do built-in electric fireplaces need to be vented?

No, built-in electric fireplaces do not need to be vented. Unlike gas or wood-burning fireplaces that require venting to expel combustion byproducts and smoke, electric fireplaces generate heat and flame effects electrically. This makes them much simpler to install and more flexible in terms of placement within a home, as they don't require connection to a chimney or external venting system. This lack of need for venting is a significant advantage, making electric fireplaces an attractive option for easy installation and minimal structural impact.

What is the difference between built-in and insert electric fireplace?

Built-in electric fireplaces are designed to be integrated directly into a wall or custom enclosure, offering a seamless look. They generally require more extensive installation that may involve construction. Electric fireplace inserts, on the other hand, are primarily meant to slide into an existing fireplace opening, simplifying installation by using the existing structure.

However, some electric firebox inserts are versatile enough to also be installed as built-in units, giving homeowners flexibility in how they incorporate the fireplace into their home’s design. This adaptability allows them to be used in new constructions or as part of renovations beyond the confines of existing fireplace spaces.
